CBN advises to assist states with agric projects

National Coordinator, Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Program (phase-1) Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Arabi

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has been implored to institute a developmental agricultural project that will reflect donors from  World and African Development Banks across the states of federation towards achieving food security, wealth and job creations in a more structured and accountable ways.

In a chat with Foodfarmnews, the National Coordinator, Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Program (phase-1) Dr. Mohammed Ibrahim Arabi said that the financial intervention mandate of CBN would be more impactful through a structured implementation and evaluation monitoring template of value chains food productivity with rural people in the states where such are not yet being implemented adding such project had always made provision for social infrastructural facilities for better livelihood.

Dr. Arabi pointed that the impact of agricultural donor projects is very evident in food security, wealth creation and infrastructural development in the rural areas, adding that the AfDB and World Bank interventions in agric projects are laudable with crystal difference of achievement in food productivity, infrastructural provision and empowerment of people in the few states of operations.

He stressed that CBN financial development mandate can be replicated or tailored along the same donor agric projects of world bank and AfDB to achieve same food productivity as recorded in Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Program ( ATASP-1) and Fadama 111 in their different states of operations.

‘’There are many other donor agricultural projects that have been doing wonderfully well in terms of empowerment and food security like Agro-Processing, Productivity Enhancement and Livelihood Support Project ( APPEALS) of World Bank, International Fund For Agriculture-Climate Change Adaptation and Agricbusiness Support Programme (IFAD-CASP), Value Chain Development Program (VCDP) also by IFAD, Rural Access And Mobility Project (RAAMP/RAMP), Livelihood Improvement and Family Enterprise-Delta (LIFE-ND), and Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support (L-PRES). All these, the CBN can replicate at all the states that are not yet participating said the ATASP-1 National Coordinator.

He was of the view that CBN would be better appreciated by replicating donor agric project saying the advantages include that

1-      It will improve food status of entire nation, and state where it is being implemented.

2-      Increase employment generation for the youths and women with wealth creation.

3-      It gives accountability due to effective monitoring and evaluation

4-      The financial management of the project fund is effective, efficient and transparent to give value for money

5-      The development strategy is also focus with clear inputs, outputs and outcomes.
