Nivik trains Kaduna ginger farmers on GAP

 

About eighteen lead farmers from four communities including Iddah, Walijo, Keyin and Gurmi-Dagana of Kagarko local government, Kaduna state were trained in the best Global Agricultural Practices (GAP) of ginger production with compliance to Rainforest Alliance standard by Nivik Investment Limited.

The training started last week Tuesday, and ended Friday.

The comprehensive training in compliance to Rainforest Alliance global standard took the participants through a thorough training in best agronomics practice of price competitiveness in ginger production with full consideration to eco system and mutual workers’ relationship void of child abuse and women exposition to chemical spray, thereby  ensuring standard to become global certified farmers of world recognition.

Mr. Olusola Adebola, the consultant trainer, Nivik Investment Limited told the lead farmers that they should be zero tolerant to sub standard practice, so as to avoid being decertified by the regulator, saying that the views of the labourers must be well respected as there must not be any iota of force labour or child abuse in labour, and chemical applications involving women.

The training according to Mr. Adebola is expected to be scaled down to other farmers who were fifty in numbers under each lead farmer who have been trained and awarded with certificates of participation.

He said all the trained leaders and their down lines were Nivik Investment ginger farmers that their produce would be off take at the end of harvest with a current market price, while premium would be paid later in cash and kind based on quantity supplied at the close of the season.

Speaking on behalf of the Nivik ginger farmers and certificate recipients, Reverend (Dr.) Pasubo Kuara said the training was superb with exposition to many practices that have been short changing farmers in terms of best practices to farming and human abuses in terms of child labour and women spraying chemical.

Rev. Kuara promised readiness to partner and work with Nivik Investment Limited in sincerity, adding that all the acquired knowledge would be scaled down to about six hundred ginger farmers in the four communities of the local government through all the lead farmers that have received certificates.

Speaking on the occasion, the National secretary, Federation of Agricultural Commodity Associaitions (FACAN) Dr. Nuhu Dogodangi advised the farmers to adhere to best agricultural practice they have been exposed to,  saying this was how they can take advantage of premium price in the crop while he thanked the Nivik Investment Limited team for bringing such empowerment opportunity to Kaduna state.

Food Farm News gathered that the covid 19 impact has positively affected the price of ginger in the favour of farmers as a hectare of a land can produce four tons which means 4,000 being multiplied by the current price of N622 per kg to give a total of N2.488.000.00 in just one season. This according to Mr. Adebola is more profitable than cocoa business.
