The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural
Development (FMARD) in collaboration with Synergos (a non-profit organization
that fights poverty and its effects) has recently held a 2-day strategy retreat
for its Directors towards unlocking institutional effectiveness of the sector
using the new agriculture roadmap “ the Green Alternative”
The retreat discussed options and provided guidance in
the development of a post 2016/pre 2017-2019 strategic framework for the Green
Alternative as priority. The retreat also prioritized in-house findings of key
intersections of policy making to enable effective delivery of pre-determined
objectives.
In his address at the retreat, Minister of Agriculture,
Chief Audu Ogbeh who enjoined the directors to ensure the promotion of sector as
being able generate $50 billion annually stressed the need clear target for
each department together with accountability.
Permanent Secretary, Dr. ShehuIdris in his overview of
the Ministry and its agencies stressed the need to work as a team towards
driving the Green Alternative pointed that the next of such retreat would
involve other affiliated parastatals for better synergy, drive, delivery and
results.
Departmental alignment as the building blocks for
delivery of the Green Alternative was stressed at the retreat as every
department in the Ministry made presentations on its mandates and plans for
2017 with focus on the Green Alternative.
The strategy retreat also witnessed other
presentations on sustainable change, systems approach, public-private sector
engagements and agriculture sector baseline data/monitoring and evaluation
framework development. There were also peer review exercise, action planning,
and target setting for key strategic objectives.
