Extinction: Ogun raises alarm on walnut, locust beans, 119 others

FG promises prioritization



Government of Ogun state, through its Ministry of Agriculture, has identified One Hundred and Twenty One (121) African nutritious food crops including walnut, locust beans and African cherry that may likely go extinction if urgent action is not taken, just as the Permanent Secretary (PS) of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) Dr. Ernest Umakhihe has promised support within the ambit of funds availability, and research provisions.

There is need for GMO seeds investment, says OFAB Coordinator



As part of efforts to ensure that more farmers get access to approved genetically modified seeds, the country coordinator, Open Forum on Agricultural Biotechnology (OFAB), Dr Rose Gidado has called for more investment in the multiplications of already released varietal seeds to meet the high demand from farmers in Nigeria.

The food prices unstoppable increase have become a thing of great concern to us and many other Nigerians despite all the financial effort going to billions of naira being expended on the sector alone to make a better food secured nation. All have been to no avail at this most critical time with the recently released statistical figures of some food items by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) which revealed the scenario in more pathetic way that has generated our concern for what needs to be done.

45th NCARD: Monarch, farmers knock agric policy on loan, insecurity





The chairman, traditional council of Chiefs and Emirs in Plateau state,  Gbong Gwom Jos, Jacob Gyang Buba together with farmers' representative Mr. Segun Dasaolu at the recently concluded 45th National Council on Agriculture And Rural Development ( NCARD) have both faulted the implementation strategies of Federal Government (FG) on food productivity, saying wrong loan disbursement and unchecked insecurity had seriously hindered food production in the country.

 The much criticisms against Genetically Modified Organism (GMO) using science of Biotechnology (Bt) engineering to enhance agricultural production in Nigeria seems not to have any negative impact on farmers who are the end users of these improved modified seeds for food cultivations. Food Farm News recent visit to some farm locations where especially the Bt cowpea are planted with high dividend of economic returns have revealed this.
