In a landmark event aimed at promoting sustainable agriculture and economic tree revival, the College of Agriculture, Kabba, under the Division of Agricultural Colleges, Ahmadu Bello University, officially commissioned a new cocoa plantation on Friday, 27th June, 2025.
The Provost of the College, Professor F. A. Ayanlere, warmly welcomed all dignitaries, staff, and students to the historic occasion. She began her address with heartfelt gratitude to Almighty God for making the day possible and expressed sincere appreciation to the Head of the Horticulture Section for facilitating the acquisition of improved cocoa seedlings from the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria (CRIN).
The Provost extended her thanks to the Heads of Programmes present, with special recognition given to Agricultural Extension & Management (AEM), Agribusiness Management (ABM), Crop Production Technology (CPT), Horticulture & Landscape Technology (HLT), and Agricultural Technology (AGT), acknowledging their continued support and collaboration.
Highlighting the significance of the project, Professor Ayanlere noted that the new cocoa plantation aligns with the Division's broader afforestation initiative, a vital effort to address the growing concern of deforestation by replanting economic trees that are being lost at an alarming rate.
The newly commissioned plantation features improved varieties of cocoa seedlings, selected for their resilience and productivity. The initiative is distinctively inclusive and educational, involving both students and staff in hands-on agricultural practice. Each academic programme received a set of seedlings to establish and maintain, with students actively participating in the nurturing process under the supervision of their respective Heads of Programmes.
In an innovative approach to ensure sustainability, the project is designed to span multiple academic years. Students will nurture the cocoa trees during their tenure and pass on the responsibility to incoming students, creating a legacy system of continuous care. Practical assessment marks will be awarded based on students’ commitment and success in managing the plants, fostering healthy competition and dedication.
The Provost emphasized the importance of teamwork and inclusivity, encouraging full participation from all programmes. The Horticulture Section is to provide ongoing technical support during the critical stages of plant establishment and growth.
In a symbolic and inspiring gesture, Professor Ayanlere presented the seedlings to the Heads of Programmes and student representatives. She then led the transplanting of the first cocoa seedling, officially inaugurating the plantation and setting the tone for a new era of practical agricultural education and environmental responsibility at the College.
