IAR director tasks scientists on meeting farmers’ need

The Institute for Agricultural Research (IAR) Executive Director (ED) Prof. M.F
Ishiyaku has asked scientists to sap efforts more on research works that will positively impact on farmers towards food security and checkmate import bills. Prof. Ishiyaku stated this in a press release made available to us by the Institute’s public relation officer, Mr. Yakubu Dodo.

The ED enjoined scientists of the Institute to focus more on improved technologies that are geared towards solving farmers and human food challenges as against elevation papers.

Giving this position at the 54th annual review of the institute’s irrigation research programme, Prof Ishiyaku in the statement pointed that scientists must adjust to giving priority to improve technologies towards attaining food security and checkmate importation.

The release quoted the ED as saying ‘’ scientists must change their orientation from evolving (embarking on) research that does not have direct bearing with the farmers who are their primary clientele and beneficiaries of such research results. Rather than focusing on research for journals to earn promotions without impacting the society, a concerted effort should be made to improve the farmer’s lot as their primary’’

‘’ he called for sustained team spirit and readiness for more challenges as the public approaches the Institute in droves for solution to their farming problems’’
