FG, OIE begin strategic plan for Vet. Services


The Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria through its department of Veterinary services in Partnership with the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) has begun strategic plan development that will enhance animal health and productivity. This was gathered during a 3 day workshop held in Abuja.

Unveiling the development, the Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr. Olaniran Alabi ably represented by Dr. Maimuna Habib stated that the repositioning of the sub sector according to the stipulated procedures of OIE would give better performance in terms of service delivery to the general improvement of animal health and commercial productivity.

 Dr. Alabi explained that the Performance of the Veterinary Services (PVS) is an important tool provided by the OIE to member countries for the assessment of strength, gaps, weakness and challenges in the animal and livestock productivity in Nigeria.

He stressed further that his department had requested for OIE expert support to develop a strategic plan for better performance towards productivity saying that the FG had requested for OIE assistance whereby various veterinary establishment, institutions, associations and facilities were visited for the purpose of being able to establish priorities and other logistic needed to carry out strategic initiatives.

 Speaking on the occasion, an Animal Health Expert, from African Union Bureau  Dr. Henry Wamwayi said that the event was to prepare a strategic plan for the improvement of Veterinary services in Nigeria, adding that OIE has prepared international standards to enhance the performance of the PVS.

Also the Specialist Consultant OIE  Dr. John Stratton said that the event is about helping Nigeria develop a strategic plan for her Veterinary services towards productivity standardization and commercialization of products like honey, meat and eggs saying Nigeria would be third nation that such support is being given.
