Mark Ocitti, the Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) managing director, has advised farmers and suppliers of locally-grown raw materials to aim for top quality of products.
He said this after completing a countrywide tour around areas that grow cassava, sorghum, maize and barley, key raw materials for UBL products.

The tour was done in the Eastern and northern districts of Mukono, Bukedea, Soroti, Apac, Lira, Gulu, Nyaka and Kiryandongo.

The aim of the visit was to engage and interact with these stakeholders in the brewery's supply chain in a bid to ensure sustainability of supply of locally-grown raw materials.

UBL, through its local raw material programme, injects Shs 20 billion annually into farming communities and value chains to obtain locally-grown raw materials for its brewing operations.

The programme further supports hundreds of farmers, especially in Lango and Teso sub-regions, with quality seeds and modern farming equipment, but also gives them the necessary training on how to achieve the right quality products.

UBL also provides ready market for farmers' produce, which in turn is used to manufacture UBL beer such as Ngule, Senator and Bell Lager, which are made from cassava and sorghum respectively.

Among the farmers visited was Sam Opio in Apac. He commended the programme for having sustained his income. He also boasts of a cassava processing factory that benefits cassava farmers within his community.
