‘It is time for West Africa to stop cattle roaming’

A strong call has been made for West African countries to stop the constant cattle roaming across the region. This call was made by Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development,Chief Audu Ogbeh in Abuja.


According to the minister, cattle roaming has continually depleted the nutrients of the grazing cows, thereby reduces quality and quantity of milk and meat produced.

“It is time for West Africa to stop cattle roaming so that the production of milk will rise while the Fulani herdsmen will live normal life,” Ogbeh buttressed.

He made this call during a meeting with World Bank officials, led by the Vice President Africa Region, Mr. Mukhtar Diop.

Furthermore, Ogbeh who mentioned the neglect of the Federal overtime to cattle farmers. He noted: “Nobody had remembered to do anything for the cattle farmers, who now resorted to self- help that often leads to violence.” Ogbeh noted that the problems of cattle movement, which had posed numerous clashes between farmers and herdsmen, needed sub regional intervention.

He sought the support of World Bank on agricultural value chain, packaging and standardization of agricultural produce, Agricultural mechanization and seed quality among others.

Also speaking during the meeting, Diop said his organization sees the vision of the present administration towards the development of agricultural sector and expressed the willingness of the World Bank to give necessary support.
