FG promises to support sugar productivity

The Federal Government ( FG) has reiterated its readiness to support sugar value chains towards reducing import cost, boosting internal production and as well creating jobs.

The Minister of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security ( FMAFS), Sen. Abubarka Kyari made this promise in a press release circulated after receiving the Niger Food Security System and Logistics Company management led by the Executive Chairman Mr. Sammy Adigun, in his office.

Kyari emphasized in the statement that the Ministry is ready to partner with credible investors to achieve self-sufficiency in line with the national sugar master plan to reduce dependency on imports.

The statement credited to the Minister, saying that “The revitalization of the sugar value chain will create a favourable investment environment, generate employment, and further galvanize Nigeria’s agricultural ecosystem," adding that the Ministry would work closely with the National Sugar Development Council and other stakeholders to unlock the full potential of the sector.

Mr. Sammy Adigun of Niger Foods Security also stated in the press release that his organization plans to cultivate 50,000 hectares of sugarcane, with a target output of 2 million tonnes.

The statement added that the company had harvested 60,000 tonnes of sugarcane from just 3 hectares of land, thereby demonstrating the potential for scalability with proper investment and support.
