The
officials of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (FMARD) may
have been praying for a technocrat as minister based on the experiences from
the immediate past one who they claimed did not do much professionally to
assist the sector. FoodFarmNews reliably
gathered.
Sources among the workers confirmed to foodfarmnews on condition of anonymity that
they would prefer someone in the mould of former minister of agriculture, Dr.
Akinwunmi Adesina who is presently the African Development Bank (AfDB)
president.
Foodfarmnews gathered that officials of the
ministry preferred an expert who is very familiar with the sector’s challenges
and having ability to proffer appropriate solution that would give intervention
to farmers and other stakeholders at the value chains of the sector saying that
someone who has grasp for commercial agriculture and in-depth knowledge of
agriculture as a business with capacity to attract foreign funding for the
sector is what the ministry would prefer.
Already the
all the nominee’s names for ministerial appointment sent to the upper chambers
of the national assembly under the 9th Assembly led by Sen. Ahmed
Ibrahim lawal has been approved, but are yet to be assigned portfolio by
President Mohammadu Buhari.
