FG Urged To Enforce Ban On Rice Importation

Abia State
The Abia State commissioner for Agriculture and a former member of the House of Representatives, Chief  Uzo  Azubuike, has urged the federal government to  sustain the ban on importation of rice and other  foods easily produced in the country irrespective of pressure from any interest groups.

The Azubuike maintained that “Given the huge food import bill of the nation especially with its dwindling economy, the federal government should not look back on the total ban of Rice   and other local  foods.”

Speaking in an interview shortly after receiving Stakeholders from the Non-oil Exportation forum in Umuahia,    the Commissioner said “Nigeria has the capacity to produce enough rice to meet local consumption  and for export.”

He said “Given  the  right investment,  Abia state  alone can meet the rice demands of the South east  states adding that  other rice belts  in the country have similar capacities  to produce  rice and other food crops  to ensure  food security.”
