Action Aid berates Agric development in Nigeria

The Nigeria Country Director, Action Aid, Mrs. Ene Obi has  scored low the development of Agriculture  in Nigeria, saying there is need for more Government’s support to farmers especially in this planting season so as to be able to mitigate food shortage in the face of Covid 19 pandemic disease.
Mrs Obi disclosed this during a radio interview on the 95.1 Nigeria Info.

She said that insufficient attention to the development of Agriculture in Nigeria has resulted to food insecurity where many could not get enough to eat especially in this Covid 19 economic lock down, thereby advising the Nigerian Government to reinforce support for farmers in order to encourage them into more food production during this 2020 planting season.

The Action Aid boss stressed the need for Nigerian government to support her farmers in view of the post covid 19 impacts, saying that more food would be needed to mitigate hunger and also create wealth in replacement of crude oil that is already losing its economic relevance in the global markets.

She decried the poverty level of most Nigerians and subsistence farmers who lived on daily incomes, pointing that things must be rightly done to avert hunger due to food insufficiency that may likely occur after the post COVID 19 impact.

Obi also wanted farmers to be treated like health workers based on their strategic position to food production, thereby  called on the need to prevent wastages of perishable crops pointing that ‘’ there are a lot of tomatoes and vegetables that are perishing already , egg producers are currently losing due to the fact that most hotels are closed. Treat farmers like health workers, because even the health worker will need to eat, without food they will die’’
