Alert! Maize lethal necrosis disease

*Expert warns Nigeria

As maize farmers in Nigeria were still battling with losses incurred by army worm, experts have cautioned on another very devastating disease called “Maize Lethal Necrosis” (MLN).

 

A scientist lecturer from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Professor Dele Fakorede has called the attention of researchers in the country for speedy action against prevention of MLN disease spread saying it was already discovered in East and Central Africa of Congo.

 

Prof. Fakorede wanted all hands to be on deck against its penetration into the country stressed the disease is more devastating more than army worm just as another Don from the Institute of Agricultural Research & Training (IAR&T) Moorplantation, Ibadan, Prof. Samuel Olakojo has highlighted some of the measures that are handy for its prevention.

 

Among measures listed by IAR&T Prof. Samuel Olakojo are that researchers should begin to carry out active resistance breeding for existing varieties against MLCD virus, there must be vigilant on import seeds to prevent penetration through this means.

 

Others are that whenever farmers noticed its symptoms on any plant, the particular plant must be uprooted and buried immediately while any unknown seeds must also be discouraged.
