Stakeholders Call For Annulment Of Nigerian Biosafety Act

Min. Agric
Stakeholders on the aegis of Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF), the African Faith and Justice Network (AFJN),  Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) and the Africa Europe Faith and Justice Network (AEFJN) have called on the Nigerian government to annul the Nigerian Biosafety Management Act (2015).

HOMEF  director,  Nnimmo Bassey, who spoke with journalists at the National Conference on Just Governance, Nigerian Biosafety Act and GMOs said that “the act was a highly defective piece of legislation contrived to open up Nigeria for a literal invasion of Genetically Modified Organisms,” adding that “Nigeria must not be a dumping ground for failed or risky technologies.

According to the environmental activists, “We demand that the law be drastically and transparently reviewed to safeguard our environment, health food systems and future generations.

“We also demand that the applications by Monsato to introduce genetically modified maize and cotton into Nigeria be set aside as Nigeria must not be a dumping ground for failed or risky technologies. Some of us are concerned that agricultural modern biotechnology or genetic engineering is already being surreptitiously introduced into Nigeria.
