Interior Minister calls for weather gardens in schools

The Minister of Interior, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola has in the 2023 Seasonal Climate Predictions (SCP) called on the Government to  revive schools' weather garden across the country to create awareness of climate change negative effects on farmlands, properties and human lives.

Aregbesola pointed out that when his generation were in primary school, such elements were accessible for students to understand what the climate and weather predictions were all about.

According to him "when we were in primary school the people of my generation had a weather garden in our schools 

 which consist of the rain metre, rain gauge, the wind vane and some other things. What are those things for, to create our consciousness to weather and the environment.Now as time went by those things have been destroyed, and nobody cared, we need to see how we can get government from local, state and federal to repair those things because of their usefulness to the kids at that age "

Aregbesola stressed negative effects of weather predictions on windstorm saying unlike Nigeria that they are very destructive forces in the USA with huge destruction of human settlements.

He further commended the leadership of Aviation and NiMet on their roles to ensure that we had timely SCP yearly farming and other business planning.

Meanwhile the NiMet DG/ CEO, Prof. Mansur Bako Mutazu  has also said that his agency had for some time now adopted some schools across the Federal Capital Territory to enhance easy access to information regarding climate and weather conditions in Nigeria cum climate facilities that would help them to build capacity.
